I’m the teacher. I’m Stephanie. Ten years ago you could have found me working as a dining room manager for Donald Trump at his property in Bedminster, New Jersey. At 23 I loved it! I got to meet celebrities and learn from some of the top business people in the world including Donald Trump himself. I worked from morning till night. I ran events. I had a great staff. It was wonderful. As I got older tho, working in restaurants and country clubs started to wear on me a bit. Working until 2 am is great when you’re in your 20’s. Not so much fun when you’re in your 30’s however.
I had always loved computers and technology. I always had the newest gadgets and phones. When the internet started becoming a thing, I was on it. I was shopping on it. I joined Facebook. It was awesome. Loads of fun. That’s when I started to realize there had to be a way to meld my two worlds. All the business knowledge I had plus getting information out there on the internet. Business knowledge + internet = EGM for me.
EGM is my Digital Marketing business. It started out as a management consulting firm but through the years has developed into a marketing consulting firm. This happened because of my sheer love of marketing. Ten years ago I didn’t know I loved marketing. But I also didn’t know I loved spinach.
I started out helping businesses define their strategies. I would help business owners stream line their processes and procedures to make them more efficient. Maybe they were doing their accounting by hand. I would set them up on excel. Maybe they didn’t have an opening and closing procedure for their store. I would create one. Maybe they didn’t have weekly meetings. I would help them set up meeting agendas. You get the idea here.
The problem with this was that I had a third thing I loved to do. I loved to travel. I went to Mexico and Italy and fell in love with the idea of travelling the world. So I wanted something that would allow me to earn a living while also getting to stay on the beach all afternoon. That’s when I really became serious about web design.
I took any job anyone was willing to pay me. One of my very first jobs was to install 100 wordpress sites via ftp transfer (not the simple one click process it is now mind you), for a grand total of $50. I loved it. It was one of the best jobs I ever did. And so my career continued in this fashion. It was always a part time gig. I was constantly teaching myself new things about WordPress, blogging, social media, SEO. If there was a webinar or free course out there, I took it! I started reading lots of books and teaching myself everything I could.
Finally, as I had started to settle down in life, I told my husband (we were still engaged at the time) I didn’t want to work in restaurants and hotels anymore. I wanted to do websites. Full time. Like a real job. I wanted my own business. This is what I loved doing and so that was all I wanted to do. And I did. I got lots of clients. So many that I had to start hiring help. It was wonderful.
Now, I want to pass this knowledge on to you. I want you to learn all the things it me years to learn. How to deal with clients. How to create a system that gets you happy clients every time and gets you referrals. How to market yourself so that people want to hire you. And of course how to actually design websites!
